Elavon
Merchant acquirer owned by U.S. Bancorp, with a substantial European business run out of Ireland.
Elavon is the merchant acquiring arm of U.S. Bancorp. Unlike most bank-owned acquirers it has a real business outside its home market: its European operation runs through U.S. Bank Europe DAC, trading as Elavon Merchant Services and authorised as a credit institution by the Central Bank of Ireland.
That matters commercially. A bank-licensed acquirer carries the underwriting itself rather than renting a sponsor bank, which tends to mean slower onboarding and steadier merchant accounts — the opposite trade from a fast-onboarding aggregator.
It bought Sage Pay in 2019 to add a gateway and a UK and Irish merchant base. Its European bases are given as Ireland, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Spain, Norway and the United Kingdom.
How many countries it covers in total is genuinely unclear from public sources, which disagree — see the note on this listing.
What Elavon costs
Elavon quotes per merchant. What you are offered depends on your volume, your industry, the countries you sell in, your card mix and your risk profile — so a published headline rate would not be your rate. Ask them for a quote against your own numbers.
What the last check found
Country coverage is left empty because the public figures contradict each other: a 2019 Elavon press release describes operations in 10 countries, while Wikipedia says more than 30. The named European bases (Ireland, Germany, Poland, Sweden, Spain, Norway, UK) are in the prose rather than the data, because the page they come from was reached through a search summary rather than directly. The Central Bank of Ireland authorisation of U.S. Bank Europe DAC trading as Elavon Merchant Services is the firmest fact here and is the basis for the regulation confidence.
From the last check against Elavon’s own documentation. Coverage changes; confirm anything you are about to build on.
