Orange Money

Orange Money is a mobile USSD payment and wallet service operating across multiple African and Middle Eastern markets.

Orange Money is a mobile USSD payment and wallet service operating across multiple African and Middle Eastern markets. Customers fund wallets via agents, bank transfers, or inbound remittances, then authorize payments through USSD or app-based verification. Merchants receive near-instant settlement with strong KYC controls and minimal fraud exposure. Orange Money is ideal for e-commerce, utilities, and retail, especially in regions transitioning from cash to mobile-based financial services.

What Orange Money costs

Merchants do not pay Orange Money directly. Each payment provider that offers it sets its own rate, so compare a few and ask them to quote.

What the last check found

Orange Money is the mobile money wallet of Orange S.A., the French telecoms group, run through local subsidiaries rather than as one licensed entity — so it is a single brand over a dozen separate national schemes, each with its own regulator, float and settlement. It is a specific branded rail, not a category, and belongs in the directory as one method with a wide footprint.

Orange's own developer portal (om-webpay) names eleven live markets: Mali, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire, Senegal, Madagascar, Botswana, Guinea Conakry, Guinea-Bissau, Sierra Leone, DR Congo and the Central African Republic, with Egypt "to be added later". Merchants register through a local Orange store, and each country has only one or two approved integration partners — so going direct is a country-by-country commercial exercise, not a single API contract. Checkout is unusual: the customer approves each payment with a one-time password generated over USSD on their handset.

For an integrator the practical route is an aggregator, and dLocal is the only gateway of the nine checked that documents it. dLocal carries Orange as payment_method_id OR for pay-ins in Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire (XOF) and Cameroon (XAF), and as beneficiary wallet type ORANGE for payouts in those three plus Mali and Burkina Faso. Flow matters: Senegal and Côte d'Ivoire are REDIRECT, Cameroon DIRECT, and dLocal warns the wrong flow fails the payment; the generic MW code routes only to DIRECT providers, so Orange must be requested explicitly. Refunds and payouts are documented.

Documentation is silent on recurring, chargebacks, and currencies outside XOF/XAF. Adyen, Antom, Stripe, Airwallex, Mollie, Checkout.com, Rapyd, EBANX and Worldline publish nothing on it.
