Website

Adyen is a Dutch payments company, founded in Amsterdam in 2006 by Pieter van der Does and Arnout Schuijff. Its gateway, risk tools, acquiring and settlement all run on one platform that the company built in-house. Adyen N.V. has held a Dutch banking licence since 2017, passported across the EEA, and adds a UK branch authorised by the PRA and FCA plus a federally licensed branch in San Francisco. Listed on Euronext Amsterdam, it processed €1.39 trillion of payments in 2025.

Local acquiring covers the EEA, the UK, the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, India and the UAE. Alongside the card schemes and US debit networks such as Accel and NYCE, one contract gives access to iDEAL, BLIK, Swish, TWINT, Pix, UPI, Alipay, WeChat Pay, PayPal and BNPL brands including Klarna and Affirm. Merchants connect through an API, web and mobile SDKs, a hosted checkout or plugins for Adobe Commerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud and Shopify, and can run shop-floor sales on Adyen's own terminals from the same account.

Pricing is published, which is rare at the enterprise end of the market. Each transaction carries a fixed processing fee (€0.11, £0.11 or $0.13, depending on the price list) plus a method fee. For Visa and Mastercard that is interchange++ plus 0.60%; American Express costs 3.95% outside North America, iDEAL €0.22 and SEPA Direct Debit €0.27. There is no setup or monthly fee, although Adyen sets a minimum invoice by industry and calls the listed rates indicative.

The model suits mid-sized and large merchants selling across several countries or channels more than start-ups with modest volumes. Onboarding means full KYB checks on the company, its owners and its payout accounts. Gambling, CFD and crypto trading, casual dating and travel sit on Adyen's restricted list and need written approval, while US gambling and binary options are refused outright.
