Airtel Money

Airtel Mobile Money is a telecom-operated mobile wallet used across multiple markets including Africa and India for instant person-to-merchant payments.

Airtel Mobile Money is a telecom-operated mobile wallet used across multiple markets including Africa and India for instant person-to-merchant payments. Customers fund their wallet via agents, bank transfers, or inbound remittances, then authorize payments using USSD, app, or SIM-based prompts. Merchants receive instant settlement with strong KYC and transaction-level security. Airtel Money is ideal for cash-light regions, e-commerce, utilities, and digital service payments with broad mobile penetration.

What Airtel Money costs

Merchants do not pay Airtel Money directly. Each payment provider that offers it sets its own rate, so compare a few and ask them to quote.

What the last check found

Not a category: Airtel is a brand (Bharti Airtel / Airtel Africa), and "Airtel Mobile Money" is its branded mobile-money wallet, not the "mobile money" kind of payment.

Same method, confirmed by Nuvei itself using both names for one product. I downloaded and parsed the paired Nuvei spreadsheet (xlsx, not readable by fetch — unzipped and parsed sheet1 locally); row 78 is "Airtel Money", paymentMethod apmgw_Airtel_Money, deposit TRUE, refund TRUE, withdraw FALSE, currencies KES, MWK, RWF, TZS, UGX, USD, ZMW, countries KE, MW, RW, TZ, UG, ZM. Nuvei's own product page for the same APM is literally titled "Airtel Mobile Money" (nuvei.com/apm/airtel-mobile-money) and opens "Airtel Money is an E-wallet in India and 14 countries across Africa" — so listing name and gateway name are two Nuvei labels for one wallet, not a shared-word coincidence.

What I recorded and from where. Six countries and seven currencies come from the Nuvei docs matrix dated Jan 5 2026 (KE/KES, MW/MWK, RW/RWF, TZ/TZS, UG/UGX, ZM/ZMW, plus USD). Four more countries come from a second gateway API doc I fetched, pawaPay's Providers page, which lists Airtel as the MMO per country: DR Congo (AIRTEL_COD, CDF and USD), Republic of the Congo (AIRTEL_COG, XAF), Gabon (AIRTEL_GAB, XAF), Nigeria (AIRTEL_NGA, NGN), and repeats MW, RW, TZ, UG, ZM. Every country and currency above is stated by one of those two docs; nothing is inferred from Airtel Africa's "14 countries" marketing claim, which I could not verify from an Airtel source (airtel.africa returns 403; developers.airtel.africa is an Angular shell whose llms.txt, sitemap.xml and robots.txt all return the same HTML, so the country/currency table is API-loaded and not fetchable).

Two Nuvei surfaces disagree, and I excluded the suspect side. The product page's country/currency fields read Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Albania, India, Zambia and USD, ALL, ZMW, TZS, INR, KES — it omits Malawi and Rwanda and adds Albania and India. I left Albania/ALL out: Airtel has no Albanian operation, the Jan-2026 technical matrix omits it, and this repo's earlier Nuvei pass already recorded "Airtel Money under Albania" as one of that directory's visible data errors (research/out/nuvei.json). I also left India/INR out as unresolved rather than publish it: Airtel Money in India is real (Airtel Payments Bank's wallet) and the product page states it, but Nuvei's own current technical matrix does not, and where two gateway surfaces conflict the integration matrix wins. Worth a later pass against an Indian-market source.

Ghana deliberately excluded: pawaPay's Ghana row is "AT / AIRTELTIGO_GHA", the AirtelTigo (now AT) joint venture — a different method, and this database already carries it as airtel-tigo / airteltigo.

One housekeeping flag: the method table holds both airtel-mobile-money and airtel-money as separate slugs (backend/src/db/seed/03_methods.js lines 9-10), and prior research mapped Nuvei to one each way (research/out/nuvei.json uses airtel-mobile-money, backend/src/db/research/018-recheck.json uses airtel-money). They are one product. These rows belong on airtel-mobile-money with airtel-money aliased to it — same pattern as the giftcards/alipay-hk aliases — otherwise the footprint stays split across two listings. Note the existing data file backend/src/db/data/method-countries.json already holds Flutterwave-sourced countries under the airtel-money key (TZ, UG, KE, ZM, RW, NG).
