Mollie is an Amsterdam payment service provider set up in 2004 by Adriaan Mol, who also founded MessageBird. It stayed self-funded for years before raising €665m in 2021 from Blackstone, EQT and General Atlantic. On 1 September 2026 it completed a €1.1bn purchase of the British bank-payment company GoCardless, which keeps its own brand inside the group. Mollie B.V. holds an electronic money institution authorisation from De Nederlandsche Bank under relation number F0038, and since November 2023 the group has also run a UK arm, Mollie UK Ltd, authorised by the FCA as a payment institution after Brexit's temporary permissions regime lapsed.
It sells only inside Europe. Businesses registered in the 30 EEA states, Switzerland or the UK can open an account; an IBAN or UK bank account is required, and Cyprus, Liechtenstein and Malta carry a minimum sales volume. The method list is heavily European: Visa, Mastercard, Maestro, American Express and Cartes Bancaires, Apple Pay and Google Pay, PayPal, iDEAL, Wero, Bancontact, BLIK, Przelewy24, EPS, Multibanco, MB Way, Swish, Vipps, MobilePay, Bizum, TWINT, SEPA Direct Debit and credit transfer, Bacs, Pay by Bank, and buy-now-pay-later from Klarna, Riverty, Alma and in3. Payments can be taken in 28 currencies, though non-euro support varies by method.
Pricing is the unusual part: Mollie publishes a rate for every method, per country. On the UK list, domestic consumer Visa and Mastercard cost 1.20% + 20p, European and commercial cards 2.90% + 20p and everything else 3.25% + 20p. The euro list differs again: EEA consumer cards 1.80% + €0.25, iDEAL €0.32, SEPA Direct Debit €0.35. Online payments carry no setup or monthly fee; five payouts a month are free and conversion costs 1%.
It suits European small and mid-sized online sellers, with plugins for Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento and PrestaShop. High-risk sectors are largely out: unlicensed gambling and adult content are refused outright, and licensed gambling, crypto and pharmacy need extra due diligence.
