Direct Debit is a payment method that allows businesses to collect payments directly from a customer's bank account, typically used for recurring transactions like subscriptions, bills, or memberships. As a payment method provided by various PSPs, Direct Debit offers a secure and efficient way to automate payments. It’s popular in Europe, North America, and parts of Asia for its convenience and low transaction fees. Businesses can integrate Direct Debit into their payment systems to ensure timely and reliable payment collection.

What Direct Debit costs

Merchants do not pay Direct Debit directly. Each payment provider that offers it sets its own rate, so compare a few and ask them to quote.

This is a category rather than a branded payment method, and it carries no countries or currencies deliberately.

Direct debit is a family of national schemes, not one method, and no country list belongs on the family. Adyen alone documents four of them with four different footprints: SEPA Direct Debit across nineteen euro-area countries, ACH in the United States and Puerto Rico, Bacs in the United Kingdom only, and Ratepay direct debit in Germany, Austria and the Netherlands. Elsewhere there is BECS in Australia, BECS NZ, PAD in Canada, Autogiro in Sweden and Betalingsservice in Denmark.

They are separate integrations with separate mandate rules, separate failure and re-presentment behaviour, and separate consumer rights to reverse a payment — which is the part that matters commercially, because a direct debit a customer can claw back months later is a different risk from one they cannot. Which scheme a merchant needs depends entirely on where its customers bank, so the schemes are listed individually and this entry points at them.
