PayPay is Japan's dominant QR-code wallet, run by PayPay Corporation (founded 15 June 2018, HQ Yotsuya Tower, Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo), built as a SoftBank/Yahoo Japan joint venture on Paytm technology and now under LY Corporation. Its own online-merchant page claims 75 million registered users as of August 2026. The recorded JP/JPY is correct, and there is no name collision here of the Tpay or T-Money kind: no second payment company called PayPay exists.

The trap worth flagging is the site's /overseas/ section, which a careless importer would read as a two-country footprint. It is the reverse of coverage: it lets identity-verified (本人確認) Japanese users spend abroad — in Korea at stores bearing the Alipay and ZeroPay marks, in Taiwan via TWQR. No merchant outside Japan integrates PayPay. Mirrored inbound, PayPay's merchant help carries a category for foreign visitors, where Japanese stores accept Alipay+ and HIVEX wallets through their existing PayPay acceptance.

A merchant can integrate directly. PayPay for Developers has open self-signup, and direct-contract pricing is published: 3.8% for physical goods, 10% for digital content, no fixed or monthly fee — that digital rate is punitive and is the number to notice. In-store QR runs 1.60–1.98% plus ¥1,980/store/month. Otherwise roughly fifteen PSPs and carts resell it (SB Payment, GMO PG, DG Financial Technology, KOMOJU, fincode, Shopify, BASE, STORES). Screening takes two weeks to a month; payouts are monthly.

Integration detail: the Open Payment API sits at apigw.paypay.ne.jp with a sandbox host, official Node/Python/PHP/Java SDKs, and an unusual HMAC-SHA256 Authorization header (`hmac OPA-Auth:key:mac:nonce:epoch:hash`) whose body hash is Base64 MD5 and whose epoch must be within two minutes.

Where documentation is silent: there is no llms.txt, no supported-countries page and no supported-currencies page. The API reference never defines the currency enum — JPY appears only in samples, with "unsupported currency" listed merely as an error case. JPY-only is corroborated externally rather than stated by PayPay.
