SumUp
Card readers, point of sale and online payments for small businesses across 38 markets.
SumUp sells acceptance to the smallest end of the market: a reader, a point of sale, an invoice, a payment link and a business account, bought online without a sales conversation.
It is one of the widest small-business footprints in Europe — 38 markets, covering most of the EU and EEA, the United Kingdom, Switzerland and Norway, and reaching into Latin America with Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Mexico and Peru, plus Australia, Canada and the United States.
That breadth is the thing to weigh it on. A business trading in several European countries can usually run the same provider in all of them, which is not true of most of its competitors at this size.

What SumUp costs
SumUp quotes per merchant. What you are offered depends on your volume, your industry, the countries you sell in, your card mix and your risk profile — so a published headline rate would not be your rate. Ask them for a quote against your own numbers.
Licences and regulation
Authorisations SumUp holds, as published by the provider or regulator. Check the register entry before relying on it.
What the last check found
SumUp is not one licence-holder but four, and none of them is a bank.
UK merchants contract with SumUp Payments Limited, an FCA-authorised Electronic Money Institution, register number 900700 — confirmed on the FCA's firm checker as SumUp Payments Limited, SE1 9HZ, currently holding permission. Its own safeguarding page confirms that funds are e-money held in segregated accounts at unnamed UK banks, that FSCS protection does not apply, and that on failure an insolvency practitioner returns the money, potentially slowly.
In the EEA there are two live e-money licences, which is the structurally interesting part. SumUp Limited of Dublin is on the Central Bank of Ireland's firm data page under reference C195030, on the E-Money Institutions PSD2 register, authorised 27 October 2020; it is the entity named on SumUp's German site and it passports into 23 further EEA states. SumUp EU Payments UAB remains separately licensed in Lithuania: the Bank of Lithuania's own page gives authorisation code LB001900, an electronic money institution licence for non-limited activity valid from 27 August 2019 with no end date, company code 305074395, LEI 9845008059ADD64DFS46, providing services without a branch in 30 other EEA member states. An EEA merchant should check which of the two its contract names.
Brazil is a separate BCB-authorised payment institution: the BCB's REST register returns SUMUP INSTITUICAO DE PAGAMENTO BRASIL LTDA of São Paulo as "Autorizada em Atividade", institution identifier Z9217952, prudential segment S4, prudential conglomerate "SUMUP IP - PRUDENCIAL".
The United States is the gap. SumUp Inc. (Delaware) publishes no licence and states that it is "a registered Payment Facilitator of Fifth Third Bank", with banking services from Airwallex, so US merchant funds sit with a partner bank rather than a SumUp licence. SumUp Payments Pty Limited in Australia publishes no authorisation either.
There is no corporate parent: SumUp Holdings Luxembourg S.à r.l. (B203072) and SumUp MG Holdings Sàrl (B217329) both ceased as persons with significant control on 27 February 2023, leaving only individuals, so the group is independently held.
