What Rakuten Pay costs

Rakuten Pay quotes per merchant. What you are offered depends on your volume, your industry, the countries you sell in, your card mix and your risk profile — so a published headline rate would not be your rate. Ask them for a quote against your own numbers.

What the last check found

Rakuten Pay is the consumer wallet of Rakuten Payment, Inc. (楽天ペイメント株式会社), a Rakuten Group company incorporated 1 April 2019, head office NBF Shinagawa Tower, Minato-ku, Tokyo, president Shigenobu Kobayashi. One brand covers three products that are easy to conflate. Rakuten Pay (in-store) is in-app code payment funded by Rakuten Cash balance, Rakuten Points or a card registered to the Rakuten account. Rakuten Pay (online payment) is a Rakuten ID wallet at non-Rakuten sites — the shopper picks Rakuten Pay, logs in with Rakuten ID and reuses a stored card; Rakuten's page claims 5,000+ sites. Third, the merchant-side product is a full acquiring/terminal service: the Rakuten Pay terminal and card reader take Visa, Mastercard, JCB, Amex, Diners and Discover, transit IC, Rakuten Edy, nanaco, WAON, QUICPay, iD and Apple Pay, plus rival wallets au PAY, PayPay, d払い and Smart Code. A row labelled only "Rakuten Pay" normally means the wallet, not the acquiring product.

Coverage is Japan only and Rakuten does say so, in its terms: "We provide this service within Japan in accordance with the laws of Japan." There is no coverage table, no llms.txt, and nothing resembling a supported-countries page in either sitemap (checkout.rakuten.co.jp's sitemap is stale, lastmod 2009). No currency is named anywhere on Rakuten's own pages; every amount is in yen, and Nuvei's APM spec records Rakuten Pay as JPY / Japan.

Direct integration is possible: in-store has an online application (~5 min, ~3 day review), online has an application form, and pricing is published — in-store 3.24% cards, 2.95%+ QR/e-money, ¥0 or ¥2,200 monthly; online ¥0 setup/monthly plus 4.0%, 8.0%+ for digital goods, that fee covering card cost and Rakuten Points funding. But there is no public API documentation or developer portal: the online page instead routes merchants through PSPs and carts (GMO-PG, SB Payment Service, Veritrans, Paygent, SMBC GMO PAYMENT), and KOMOJU exposes it as slug `rakutenpay`. Payout is next business day, free to Rakuten Bank. Inbound acceptance via Rakuten Bank is discontinued; offline code payment launched 4 August 2026.
