Turkey

Cards dominate online payments in Turkey. The Ministry of Trade reports that in 2025 card payments made up 62.5% of e-commerce payments, followed by bank transfers (havale/EFT) at 29.2%, cash on delivery at 3.5% and other methods at 4.8%. Credit cards matter most because shoppers expect to split purchases into instalments (taksit), and checkouts typically show the instalment options available for each bank’s card programme. Bank transfers have become faster since the Central Bank’s FAST instant payment system went live in January 2021; it runs 24/7 and processed 4.6 billion transactions in 2024. BKM data show online card spending reached TRY 760.4 billion in December 2025, up 46% year on year and about a third of all card spending. Growth figures are nominal and partly reflect inflation. Merchants need Turkish lira (TRY) pricing, domestic card acceptance including TROY, and instalments.

In-store payments in Turkey

Card payments are the norm in Turkish shops and contactless is now the default: according to the Interbank Card Center (BKM), four in five in-store card payments were contactless in December 2025. Turkey had 460.6 million payment cards at that point, including 142.1 million credit cards and 209 million debit cards, and credit cards accounted for most card spending. The domestic scheme TROY, run by BKM, operates alongside Visa and Mastercard. QR payments under the central bank’s TR Karekod standard are growing: by the end of 2024, 90% of POS terminals accepted card payments by TR QR code, although only 19% supported QR payments over FAST.

E-commerce in Turkey

The Ministry of Trade put Turkey’s e-commerce volume at more than TRY 4.57 trillion in 2025, up 52.2% on 2024 in nominal terms and equal to 6.9% of GDP. Retail e-commerce reached TRY 2.46 trillion across 1.94 billion transactions, 634,611 businesses sold online, and quick commerce grew 55.6%. Large domestic marketplaces include Trendyol, Hepsiburada, n11 and Amazon.com.tr, alongside food and grocery delivery apps. According to the World Bank Global Findex, 37% of adults paid digitally for an online purchase in 2024, while 5% paid cash on delivery. Shoppers expect lira prices, credit-card instalments and fast domestic delivery.

Payment regulation in Turkey

The Central Bank of the Republic of Türkiye (CBRT/TCMB) licenses and supervises payment and electronic money institutions under Law No. 6493 and runs the FAST instant payment system and the TR Karekod QR standard; in 2024 it approved eight new operating licences and fined 55 institutions a total of TRY 160.3 million. Banks are supervised by the Banking Regulation and Supervision Agency (BDDK), which also caps the number of credit-card instalments allowed for certain product categories. Payment service providers must keep their primary and secondary IT systems in Turkey. Since 30 April 2021 a CBRT regulation has banned the use of crypto assets, directly or indirectly, for payments.

Banking and financial inclusion

According to the World Bank Global Findex, 82% of adults in Turkey had an account in 2024, up from 74% in 2021. Card ownership is high: in 2024, 79% of adults owned a debit card and 44% owned a credit card. In the same year, 62% of adults made a digital payment and 52% made a digital payment to a merchant.
