PayU is the payments business of Prosus, the Amsterdam-listed technology investor that grew out of Naspers. The brand dates to 2002 and once reached more than 30 countries, but the group has been cut back deliberately. Rapyd closed its purchase of PayU's Global Payment Organisation in Latin America and Africa on 14 March 2025, taking the Mexican, Brazilian, Argentine, Chilean, Colombian, Peruvian, Nigerian and South African operations with it. Some of those sites still carry PayU branding; the businesses behind them are Rapyd's.
What Prosus kept is India, Central and Eastern Europe, Turkey and a Singapore arm. India is the biggest piece. The Reserve Bank of India authorised PayU Payments Private Limited as an online payment aggregator on 13 May 2025, and the same certificate covers in-store acceptance and cross-border collections and payouts. Indian merchants get UPI, RuPay, domestic and international cards, netbanking, wallets, EMI and pay-later options. In Europe, PayU S.A. of Poznan has been a registered Polish payment institution (IP1/2012) since November 2012 and runs PayU checkouts in Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and Romania, where BLIK, pay-by-link transfers and instalments from Klarna, PayPo and Twisto sit beside cards. Turkey trades as iyzico, Singapore as Red Dot Payment.
Pricing is published only in India: 2% on domestic cards, netbanking, wallets and pay-later, 3% on American Express, Diners, EMI and international payments, plus 18% GST, with no set-up or annual fee and T+2 settlement as standard. European rates are quoted merchant by merchant. The practical question is which company a merchant would actually sign with, because licences, products and checkout differ between Mumbai, Warsaw and Istanbul. Anyone trading in the divested markets should be looking at Rapyd rather than PayU.
