Swish

Swish is Sweden’s real-time mobile payment system linking customer bank accounts to mobile numbers.

Swish is Sweden’s real-time mobile payment system linking customer bank accounts to mobile numbers. Payments are authorized via BankID, providing strong authentication and instant settlement via a typical open-banking flow. Merchants benefit from low fees, high trust, and widespread adoption across Swedish consumers. Swish supports online checkout, QR payments, and in-app commerce, making it essential for Swedish e-commerce, retail, and public services.

What Swish costs

Merchants do not pay Swish directly. Each payment provider that offers it sets its own rate, so compare a few and ask them to quote.

This is one of the minority of methods that works in both directions: Nuvei's integration data records it as supporting payouts as well as payments and refunds. For anyone who needs to send money out as well as take it in — marketplaces, gaming, insurance, anything with a payout leg — that halves the number of rails worth considering, and this is one of them.

A single-country method, in Sweden, charged in SEK, documented by Adyen, Antom, Nuvei, Airwallex and Stripe. Nothing wrong with that — a domestic rail is usually the cheapest and highest-converting way to be paid in its own market, and the reason to care about it is precisely that it is the local default rather than a global option.

Adyen files it under "Wallets", and states it supports Multiple partial refunds and Partial refunds. Its catalog is the one place in this industry that publishes a method's countries, its processing currencies and its settlement currencies separately, which is the difference between what a customer can be charged in and what a merchant can be paid in.

One constraint that is easy to miss: a provider documenting this method also states where the MERCHANT has to be incorporated for it to be offered — Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, the Czech Republic, Germany, Denmark, Estonia and 22 more. Where a shopper can pay from and where a business can be registered are different questions, and it is the second one that decides whether you can sign at all.
