Indonesia
Indonesians mostly pay online with e-wallets and bank transfers. Worldpay estimated that in 2024 digital wallets such as DANA, GoPay and OVO took 42% of e-commerce value and account-to-account payments 32%, the latter covering bank virtual accounts, the BI-FAST instant payment system and QRIS codes shown at checkout. Cards are a minority, at about 6% for credit and 6% for debit, and paylater services took around 3%. Cash methods, mainly cash on delivery and over-the-counter payment at convenience stores such as Indomaret and Alfamart, still made up 11%. To convert, a merchant pricing in Indonesian rupiah (IDR) needs the main e-wallets, virtual accounts at the largest banks, QRIS and a cash or cash-on-delivery option.

In-store payments in Indonesia
Cash is falling fast at the till: Worldpay estimates its share of in-store spending dropped from 77% of value in 2019 to 36% in 2025. The main replacement is QRIS, Bank Indonesia’s national QR standard, which any bank or e-wallet app can scan. Bank Indonesia reported 12.55 billion QRIS transactions worth Rp600.7 trillion in the first half of 2026, with about 66 million users and 44.86 million merchants. Debit cards on the domestic GPN scheme, Visa and Mastercard are accepted on EDC terminals in modern retail, while credit cards remain niche.
E-commerce in Indonesia
Worldpay sized Indonesian e-commerce at about US$43 billion in 2024 and forecasts 13% annual growth to reach about US$90 billion by 2030. Marketplaces dominate, led by Shopee, Tokopedia (combined with TikTok Shop since 2024), Lazada and Blibli. Cash on delivery remains widespread: in the World Bank’s 2024 Findex survey, 77% of Indonesians who bought something online had paid cash on delivery. Merchants should price in rupiah, integrate virtual accounts for several major banks, support the leading e-wallets and offer cash on delivery or convenience-store payment to reach first-time and unbanked buyers.
Payment regulation in Indonesia
Bank Indonesia (BI) regulates payment systems and licenses payment service providers (PJP) and payment infrastructure operators under Regulation 22/23/PBI/2020; for non-bank PJPs, at least 15% of shares and at least 51% of voting shares must be held by Indonesian parties. The Financial Services Authority (OJK) supervises banks, paylater providers and fintech lenders. QRIS is the mandatory national standard for QR payments; from 1 October 2026 its merchant discount rate is 0% for micro merchants on payments up to Rp500,000 and for all merchants up to Rp100,000, with 0.3% (micro) or 0.7% (others) above those thresholds. Transactions within Indonesia must be denominated in rupiah under the Currency Law.
Banking and financial inclusion
The World Bank’s Global Findex 2025 found that 56% of Indonesian adults had an account in 2024, up from 52% in 2021, and 22% had a mobile money (e-wallet) account. Only 41% owned a debit card and about 6% a credit card, and 30% had made a digital payment in the past year. Cash still feeds the digital system: in Worldpay’s survey, 12% of Indonesian respondents named cash as the way they typically fund their digital wallet.
