BitPay was founded in 2011 by Tony Gallippi and Stephen Pair and is based in Atlanta, Georgia, with a European arm, BitPay B.V., in the Netherlands. It was one of the first processors to let merchants take Bitcoin without holding it. The shopper pays a BitPay invoice from their own wallet, BitPay handles the conversion, and the merchant is paid in its own currency, in crypto or in a mix of the two.
Merchants can accept Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ether, Litecoin, Dogecoin, XRP, Shiba Inu and stablecoins such as USDC, DAI, Pax Dollar and Gemini Dollar. BitPay says it supports more than 100 assets, on networks including Solana, Base, Arbitrum and Optimism. Settlement is daily, to a bank account in US, Canadian, Australian or New Zealand dollars, euros, sterling or Mexican pesos, or to a crypto wallet. Plug-ins cover Shopify, WooCommerce, Magento 2, BigCommerce and WHMCS, with SDKs for Node.js, PHP, Python, Java and C#, and the product range also includes email billing, crypto payouts, in-store payments and donations.
Pricing is public and falls with volume: 2% plus 25 cents per transaction below $500,000 a month, 1.5% plus 25 cents up to $1 million and 1% plus 25 cents above that. High-risk sectors pay more, and the rates for them are not published.
BitPay is also a payment method in its own right. Its self-custody BitPay Wallet lets people buy crypto, pay BitPay invoices and buy gift cards. On the regulatory side, BitPay, Inc. is registered with FinCEN as a money services business and holds state money transmitter licences where required, while BitPay B.V. is supervised by De Nederlandsche Bank for anti-money-laundering purposes. It suits merchants who want crypto at checkout without running wallets themselves. BitPay does not publish a list of eligible countries, so businesses outside the US and Europe should check before applying.

What BitPay costs
BitPay quotes per merchant. What you are offered depends on your volume, your industry, the countries you sell in, your card mix and your risk profile — so a published headline rate would not be your rate. Ask them for a quote against your own numbers.
- Settlement
- Daily settlement to a bank account in fiat, to a crypto wallet, or split between the two
Pricing, in detail
Tiered by cumulative monthly volume: under $500,000 2% + $0.25; $500,000-$999,999 1.5% + $0.25; $1m+ 1% + $0.25. Higher, unpublished rates for high-risk industries. No settlement, setup or monthly fees listed.
What the last check found
Type both: BitPay is a merchant processor and also a consumer method (pay a BitPay invoice from the BitPay Wallet); slug matches the existing method term bitpay. supported_by left empty: PSPs offering BitPay as a method were not researched (the search budget for this run ran out). Countries left empty: BitPay publishes no list of countries where merchants can be onboarded; its legal page lists countries whose residents contract with BitPay B.V. for BitPay ID and Send, which is not a merchant list. DNB: the legal page still cites registration under the Wwft; since MiCA (December 2024, Dutch transition to mid-2025) Wwft crypto registrations should have been replaced by a MiCA licence, which was not checked. The NYDFS licence number was not found; BitPay's legal page refers to complaints to NYDFS and to a New York virtual currency licence but does not state the number. WHMCS is also supported but has no taxonomy key. Tokens on the pricing page not in the taxonomy (Gemini Dollar, Pax Dollar, Wrapped BTC, ApeCoin, EURC) are mentioned in the description where relevant but not recorded as currencies. Binance USD (BUSD) is listed on BitPay's pricing page although Paxos stopped issuing it in 2023.
