Payment gateways

A payment gateway is the technology that captures payment details at checkout — on a website, in an app or through an API — encrypts them and sends them to the acquirer or processor for authorisation, then returns the result. Many gateways come bundled with acquiring from a payment service provider; standalone gateways connect to acquirers the merchant contracts with separately.
