BLIK

Six-digit codes from Polish banking apps: 2.9bn BLIK transactions in 2025. Live in Poland and, via Tatra banka only, Slovakia; Romania is authorised but not yet live.

BLIK is Poland's mobile payment scheme, operated by Polski Standard Płatności (PSP), a Warsaw company that six Polish banks set up in 2013. The service went live in February 2015. PSP's shareholders today are Alior Bank, Bank Millennium, Erste Bank Polska (the former Santander Bank Polska), ING Bank Śląski, mBank, PKO Bank Polski and Mastercard. In 2025 BLIK handled 2.9 billion transactions worth PLN 441.5 billion, and by June 2026 it had 21.6 million active users. That scale led the National Bank of Poland to reclassify it as a systemically important payment system in September 2026.

To pay online, the shopper generates a six-digit code in their banking app, enters it at checkout within two minutes and confirms with a PIN. Repeat customers can use one-click payments without a fresh code, and a recurring service lets merchants take fixed or variable amounts under a mandate the customer controls in the app. Codes also work at shop terminals and cash machines, alongside contactless BLIK and phone-number transfers. Full and partial refunds are available. BLIK does run a claims process for suspected fraud, double charges and wrong amounts, so merchants should expect occasional disputes.

Merchants connect through an acquirer rather than to BLIK itself. The scheme lists dozens, from Polish gateways such as PayU, Przelewy24, Tpay and mBank's Paynow to international providers including Adyen, Stripe, Nuvei and Checkout.com, and each sets its own pricing.

Outside Poland, adoption is thinner than the expansion headlines suggest. Slovakia went live in September 2024, but Tatra banka is still the only bank issuing BLIK codes there, with payments in euros. BLIK Romania has held a central bank authorisation since October 2024, yet no Romanian bank had launched by mid-2026. For merchants selling to Polish consumers it is hard to leave out, since online purchases made up about half of BLIK's 2025 volume.

What BLIK costs

Merchants do not pay BLIK directly. Each payment provider that offers it sets its own rate, so compare a few and ask them to quote.

Settlement
Authorised in seconds; payout to the merchant depends on the acquirer (e.g. Adyen 1-2 days, Mollie within 4 business days).

Oversight and regulation

Regulators that oversee BLIK and the company that runs it, as published by the scheme or regulator. Check the register entry before relying on it.

What the last check found

Corrections vs current record: Romania (RO) and RON removed. BLIK Romania S.A. has held a National Bank of Romania authorisation since 1 October 2024, but Reuters reported in June 2026 that no Romanian bank had launched and that at least three large banks were only expected to start integrating later in 2026 (blik.com/ro still describes approval as pending, which is out of date). Slovakia (SK) and EUR added: codes have been live since September 2024, but blik.com/sk lists Tatra banka as the only issuing bank; VUB customers use BLIK SK (formerly VIAMO) phone-number transfers per TOUCHIT (Feb 2025), and Reuters' description of Slovakia as operational with Tatra banka and VUB could not be confirmed for code payments. 'open-banking' removed from categories (BLIK is a bank-app code scheme, not a PSD2 API service); p2p and pos added. The old description's 'instant settlement' claim was imprecise: authorisation is near-instant, but payout timing depends on the acquirer. Name stylised as BLIK, as the operator writes it. Company: PSP was founded in 2013 by Alior Bank, Bank Millennium, Bank Zachodni WBK (later Santander Bank Polska, rebranded Erste Bank Polska in April 2026 after Erste Group bought a 49% controlling stake), ING Bank Śląski, mBank and PKO Bank Polski; Mastercard became a shareholder in 2020 (letter of intent December 2018). Bank Pekao is an issuer, not a shareholder. PSP converted to a joint-stock company (S.A.) on 29 November 2024; third-party registries give KRS 0001141221 and an address at ul. Czerniakowska 87A, Warsaw (not checked against the official KRS). CEO Dariusz Mazurkiewicz resigned (announced 28 July 2026); no successor had been named in the sources found. Reported date of the NBP reclassification differs by a day between outlets (9 or 10 September 2026). Contactless BLIK (Mastercard-based) can be used by Polish users abroad (13 new countries in 2025), but those markets are not listed because local consumers cannot use BLIK. Recurring payments were offered by 8 banks and BLIK Pay Later by 4 banks in 2025. Per-payment maximums vary by PSP (Mollie PLN 50,000, Antom PLN 10,000) and banks set their own user limits. EuroPA/EPI cross-border interoperability is announced, not live. A National Bank of Slovakia approval in May 2023 is mentioned in BLIK's own history but its exact nature is unclear, so it is not listed under regulation. Supported_by entries sourced to blik.com/en/partners rely on the operator's own acquirer list.

Pricing, in detail

Polski Standard Płatności does not publish merchant pricing; each acquirer sets its own. Example: mBank's Paynow gateway advertises 0.95% per transaction with no set-up fee.

Is BLIK regulated?

BLIK is overseen by Narodowy Bank Polski (National Bank of Poland) and Banca Națională a României (National Bank of Romania). Always check the regulator’s public register before relying on it.
