Moneris is a Toronto-based card processor set up in December 2000 as a 50/50 joint venture between Royal Bank of Canada and BMO. By its own count it handles about one in three card transactions in Canada and serves more than 325,000 points of commerce, with about 2,000 staff. In August 2026 the two banks agreed to sell it to the private equity firm Francisco Partners for around C$2 billion. Completion is expected by early 2027, subject to regulatory approval, and both banks will keep referring business customers to Moneris under long-term agreements.
Most of its business is in store. Moneris supplies countertop and mobile terminals, including the Android-based Moneris Go range, as well as self-service kiosks and pay-at-table tools for restaurants. Across its channels it accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express, Discover and UnionPay cards, Interac debit, and Apple Pay and Google Pay. Moneris says it ran Canada's first Interac Online payment and first full EMV chip transaction, both in 2005.
Online, developers can use a hosted checkout, hosted tokenisation to reduce PCI scope, or the Moneris API directly, with SDKs on GitHub and Postman collections. A WooCommerce plug-in built by SkyVerge also accepts Diners Club and JCB, saves cards for repeat purchases and handles subscriptions. It takes Canadian and US dollars, but each currency needs its own merchant account. Pricing could not be verified for this listing, so ask for the full rate card, including terminal rental, before you sign.
Moneris suits Canadian merchants, especially those who bank with RBC or BMO and want acquiring and terminals through that relationship. It only signs up businesses in Canada, having sold its US arm to Vantiv in 2016. With new owners arriving, check any contract for change-of-control terms and how long your current pricing is fixed.

What Moneris costs
Moneris quotes per merchant. What you are offered depends on your volume, your industry, the countries you sell in, your card mix and your risk profile — so a published headline rate would not be your rate. Ask them for a quote against your own numbers.

What the last check found
moneris.com blocked all fetches (403), so pricing, the full method list and any regulatory disclosures could not be checked on Moneris's own site; facts come from its developer portal, Wikipedia (which carries promotional-tone warnings), trade press and the WooCommerce plug-in page. Ownership: as of 2026-11-06 Moneris is still owned 50/50 by RBC and BMO; the sale to Francisco Partners (announced 10-11 August 2026) is expected to close by the end of the banks' fiscal Q1 2027 (around January 2027). Update parent_company when it completes. Merchant count differs by source: Wikipedia says 350,000+ merchant locations; the developer portal and trade press say 325,000+ points of commerce. Regulation is empty: Moneris is not a bank, and its registration under Canada's Retail Payment Activities Act could not be confirmed (the Bank of Canada PSP registry loads by script and returned no entries). Diners Club and JCB come from the WooCommerce plug-in page only.
