Paytm is the payments brand of One 97 Communications, the Noida company led by founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma, which launched Paytm in 2010 and listed on Indian stock exchanges in November 2021. The name covers two things merchants should keep apart: a consumer app that people use to pay by UPI and QR code, and a payment gateway sold to businesses by the subsidiary Paytm Payments Services Limited (PPSL).
For shoppers, Paytm is now mainly a UPI app. The group's own bank, Paytm Payments Bank, was barred by the RBI from taking deposits and wallet top-ups from March 2024 and had its licence cancelled in April 2026, so Paytm UPI handles run through partner banks, with Yes Bank leading, under NPCI's third-party app rules. Old Paytm Wallet balances can be spent or withdrawn but not topped up. When a checkout offers Paytm, the customer is usually approving a UPI payment in the Paytm app.
The gateway accepts Visa, Mastercard, RuPay, American Express and Diners Club cards, UPI including AutoPay mandates, net banking with more than 50 banks, and card EMI. Merchants can integrate through the All-in-One SDK for apps, a JavaScript checkout, or plug-ins for Shopify, WooCommerce and Magento. The standard plan costs 1.99% plus 18% GST per transaction with no setup or annual maintenance fee, and settlement is next day by default, with same-day and on-demand options.
Licensing has been the sticking point. Paytm applied to be a payment aggregator in 2020, the RBI returned the application in 2022 over foreign-investment rules, and onboarding of new online merchants stalled for close to three years. PPSL received its online aggregator authorisation on 26 November 2025, followed on 17 December by approval for offline and cross-border payments. Some of Paytm's developer pages still list Payments Bank options, so confirm which methods are live for your account.

What Paytm Payment Gateway costs
Paytm Payment Gateway quotes per merchant. What you are offered depends on your volume, your industry, the countries you sell in, your card mix and your risk profile — so a published headline rate would not be your rate. Ask them for a quote against your own numbers.
- Settlement
- T+1 by default; same-day and on-demand settlement available
Pricing, in detail
Standard plan: 1.99% platform fee on all transactions plus 18% GST; no setup fee and no annual maintenance charge. Enterprise plan priced on request. The pricing page gives no per-method rates.
What the last check found
Type 'both': there is no existing method term for Paytm, so 'paytm' is proposed in new_terms to match the listing slug. No RBI certificate number for PPSL was found on Paytm's pages, so references are null. The gateway page also lists Paytm Postpaid as a pay-later option; its current availability was not confirmed, so it is left out. Paytm's docs still show 'Paytm Wallet' and 'PPBL' as default methods, which conflicts with the 2024 restrictions and the April 2026 licence cancellation; wallet use is described as spend-down only. The '3 years' onboarding pause comes from press headlines (Storyboard18) and the 2022 return of the application; exact dates of the pause were not verified. Cross-border services had to launch within six months of the December 2025 approval; whether they have launched was not confirmed.
