Nium is a cross-border payments company co-headquartered in Singapore and San Francisco. Prajit Nanu and Michael Bermingham founded it in 2014 as Instarem, a consumer remittance app, and renamed it Nium in 2019 once business payments had become the focus. A US$200 million Series D in 2021 took its valuation past $1 billion; Visa and Temasek are among its backers. It bought the travel payments firm Ixaris in 2021 and Singapore's Socash in 2022.
The core product is a payout network. Clients send money to bank accounts, cards and wallets in more than 190 countries, and Nium claims real-time delivery in over 100 of them. Its Atlas coverage tool shows the rails per market: local bank transfer, SEPA, wires, Visa Direct and proxy schemes such as UPI in India, DuitNow in Malaysia, Interac in Canada and Faster Payments in the UK. Around that sit multi-currency accounts with local details in 20+ currencies, collections in 28 currencies over rails including SEPA, ACH and Singapore's FAST, FX in 125+ currencies, account verification, and virtual and physical card issuing in more than 30 markets. Stablecoin funding and payouts are recent additions.
Nium says it holds over 40 licences and registrations. In the UK it has three FCA-authorised firms, two e-money institutions and one payment institution; the EU business holds an e-money licence from the Bank of Lithuania; and in Singapore it is a Major Payment Institution under the MAS. It is also licensed in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Indonesia, New Zealand and Brazil, and across 36 US states.
Nium does not acquire card payments, so it will not replace a checkout provider. It suits banks, fintechs, travel companies, payroll and spend-management platforms and marketplaces that pay suppliers, staff or sellers abroad, or that want to build accounts and cards on top of it. Access is by API, Swift or a web platform for smaller firms. Prices are not published.
What Nium costs
Nium quotes per merchant. What you are offered depends on your volume, your industry, the countries you sell in, your card mix and your risk profile — so a published headline rate would not be your rate. Ask them for a quote against your own numbers.

What the last check found
Countries are the markets where Nium lists its own licence or registration (where it can onboard clients); the 190+ payout destinations are not expanded. EU passporting from the Lithuanian licence is not spelled out on Nium's page, so other EU states are not listed. Currencies: Nium claims 100+ payout currencies and 28 collection currencies but names few; only USD, EUR, GBP, AUD and SGD are recorded (implied by named rails), so confidence is low. AED, NGN, GHS and CAD collection corridors were announced for Q2 2026 and are not recorded. India is covered through AD-1 bank partners and an AD-II licence (Nium Forex) with no reference shown, so no India regulation entry; IN is still listed as a country. Indonesia's BI-FAST and the UAE's IPP appear in Atlas; BI-FAST is proposed as a new method term, IPP is left out. Pix is likely the 'proxy payout' in Brazil but is not named, so not recorded. Wikipedia lists Wirecard Forex India (2021) as another acquisition.
