Unzer is a Berlin payments group formed in 2020 around the German provider Heidelpay, which KKR had bought in 2019. After costly expansion it was restructured in 2023: a creditor group of Alcentra, Goldman Sachs Asset Management and Partners Group took majority control, with KKR left as a minority holder. Its licensed German company, Unzer E-Com GmbH in Heidelberg, is a payment institution supervised by BaFin, and a Luxembourg subsidiary is on the CSSF's list of payment institutions. The group's imprint now also includes the Danish acquirer Clearhaus and the gateway Quickpay. Unzer reports about 90,000 merchants.
The product range runs from online checkout to card terminals and till software, and includes Unzer's own pay-later options: invoice, instalments and direct debit, where Unzer carries the default risk and guarantees the merchant's money. Its developer docs limit online card acceptance to Visa and Mastercard, with Click to Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay and PayPal on top. Local methods include iDEAL, Bancontact, EPS, Przelewy24, PayU in Poland and the Czech Republic, TWINT and PostFinance in Switzerland, Klarna in the Nordics, Alipay, WeChat Pay, SEPA direct debit, a pay-by-bank transfer and Wero. Plug-ins cover Shopify, Shopware, Magento, WooCommerce, PrestaShop, OXID, JTL and a dozen other shop systems.
Prices are not published. Unzer offers either an all-in-one bundle or a quote built for the merchant. Its core market is Germany, Austria and Switzerland, and the invoice and instalment products work only there, with invoice also offered in the Netherlands.
Merchants should know its regulatory history. In 2022 BaFin fined Unzer E-Com, appointed a special monitor and stopped it from taking on new customers after an audit found serious shortcomings; the restrictions were fully lifted in October 2024. Unzer suits DACH retailers, restaurants and online shops that want one provider for till and web with invoice payments handled in-house. Businesses in adult, betting or other higher-risk sectors should expect close checks.
What Unzer costs
Unzer quotes per merchant. What you are offered depends on your volume, your industry, the countries you sell in, your card mix and your risk profile — so a published headline rate would not be your rate. Ask them for a quote against your own numbers.
Pricing, in detail
No public price list; Unzer offers an all-in-one package or an individual quote for e-commerce and POS.
What the last check found
founded_year is the formation of the Unzer group (2020); Heidelpay's own founding year was not verified. Parent left null: majority owned since 2023 by a creditor consortium (Alcentra, Goldman Sachs Asset Management, Partners Group) with KKR as a minority holder, per press and Wikipedia; ownership not confirmed on an Unzer page. The BaFin onboarding ban is dated 2022 on Wikipedia and reported in August 2023 by IT Finanzmagazin; Wikipedia says all restrictions were lifted in October 2024. Wikipedia also says Unzer was among German providers named in a 2025 fraud investigation ("Operation Chargeback") concerning 2016–2021 subscription billing, with Heidelpay's former founder among the suspects; not used in the description. Unzer's homepage shows American Express and Diners/Discover logos, but the card docs say only Visa and Mastercard are supported online, so Amex and Diners are left out. Countries are DACH plus Luxembourg (licensed entity) and markets where Unzer offers a local method (NL, BE, PL, CZ, Nordics for Klarna); SEPA direct debit coverage is not expanded. Clearhaus (Denmark) appears on the Unzer imprint as a group company; when it joined was not verified.
